Chapter 6 Tour of Duty

“We will have results from the tests by morning. I will email you as soon as we have them,” Kate confirmed as Shatter walked out the door. He was headed to the Ops center in the basement. Mark – the code name for POTUS, had asked for a tour to better understand the capabilities that he was now responsible for.

In the middle of all Shatter had to do he did not relish the notion of having to hold the President’s hand and give him a tour of the facility. But Harvey had asked him to do it, and Shatter got the feeling that it was to get him closer to the President. The prevailing rumor was that Harvey was about to retire and he wanted to get Shatter into good books with Mark.

“Sintac’s Ops center is built six stories below the street level, into the bedrock,” Shatter began as he and the President made their way along the descending corridor to the subterranean complex. The entire underground portion of the facility stretches from Charles River and reaches the bay, under downtown Boston.”

Mark, not a tech enthusiast, was already impressed. The size of the facility and the fact that it was carved out of the bedrock was nothing short of astonishing. “If you recall the Big Dig,” Shatter continued. “I remember it well as it was a traffic nightmare to make it into the city during rush hour. I was in Harvard at the time. The public was told that it was to reroute the Interstate and build the tunnel to ease congestion.”

“Yeah, I remember that,” said the president.

“Well it wasn’t just to reroute the road and put in a new tunnel, it was also to build this,” shatter said as he led Mark into the cavern. The president had been given an idea of the resources Sintac possessed, but the sight of it knocked him off his proverbial feet.

“This is the lowest floor of the cavern. There is one more floor but it is inaccessible. It holds the quantum processor racks,” Shatter explained. “Water from the Charles was piped in to flood the encased servers, to keep them from overheating. Without the water to cool them the servers would meltdown in a matter of minutes.”

“Here,” Shatter said pointing to the titanium racks of blinking lights, “below the Ops Center, is the highly sophisticated array of holographic storage media, stretching three football fields beneath the river.”

The quantum servers were not the kinds of computational technology the rest of the world was aware of. Each cubic foot of processing power that populated the subterranean vault was capable of computations equivalent to that of all of the east coast.

The storage system was also well ahead of what the rest of the world used. Three-dimensional holographic storage in the cavernous vault was able to store three times the amount of data generated by the entire world in a space the size of a human thumb.

These resources were used exclusively for threat analysis.
